Located in the stunning East Sussex countryside, Holy Cross Care Home is a 60 bed, purpose-built care home that offers both residential and nursing care.
The care home sits within the Holy Cross Retirement Village – which is a community where history, compassion, and family spirit come together. With over 150 years of heritage, the site has grown from a Victorian manor into a vibrant village where residents are supported to live life with dignity, comfort, and joy.

Our Story
It all started with The Holy Cross Priory in 1866, a magnificent country house built by art collector Louis Huth, before later serving as a hotel and even playing its part in the Second World War. Part of the Priory was occupied by high-ranking officers, and even some of the D-Day plans were formulated here by Sir Winston Churchill, General Eisenhower, and Lord Montgomery.
In 1964, Mother Mary – the foundress of the Grace and Compassion Benedictines – recognised the building’s potential as a place of care, transforming it into the compassionate, friendly, warm-hearted environment it is today.
Over the years, the estate has been lovingly redeveloped into today’s Holy Cross Retirement Village - a beautiful setting that blends history with modern facilities, offering residential and nursing care alongside independent living apartments, a chapel, and the welcoming Stonehill Restaurant.

Independent Living Options
If you or your loved one is not quite ready to move into a care home, then within the village is an alternative range of independent living apartments. These stylish apartments come with warden assistance which is a great stepping stone for people that don’t need day to day care but do want some extra reassurance in case of a medical emergency.
The flats offer private living with the reassurance of an on-site warden and access to shared facilities. Apartments are fitted with emergency cords that are connected to a 24/7 medically trained call team. Residents can also wear pendants that can call for assistance in case of an emergency.
